ODYSSEE’s Water News: Mastering Corrosion for Closed Loops – Before, During, and After Summer Shutdowns

Introduction

Most heating loops are shut down during the summer months. During these periods of inactivity, stagnant water often leads to uncontrolled corrosion within the system.

One of our international customers—a well-known player in the food industry—shuts down the heating system in their office building from June 1st to October 1st, depending on outdoor temperatures. This seasonal downtime creates a critical window where system protection must be ensured.

Installation

2 Boilers TotalTube 3’300 kW

Make-up : Soft water (boilers manufacturer’s recommendations)
Estimated Volume = 4’000 gal
System materials : Steel / Cast Iron / Stainless Steel
There is no aluminum in the system today, but the heaters have been scheduled for replacement with aluminum units for several years. The circuit pH has already been adjusted accordingly

A blend of Film-Forming Amines & Cleaners (ODYTHERM FS 500) is fed proportionnaly to the make-up, at 5’000 ppm.
A residual of amine assures the correct levels for treatment.

This chart shows the evolution of iron concentration (ppm) in the closed-loop heating system over time, with the shaded areas indicating summer shutdown periods.

At the start (February 2015), iron levels were high (~3 ppm), reflecting active corrosion.

Each summer shutdown (highlighted in orange) typically corresponds to a stagnation phase. Despite this, the graph shows a continuous decrease in iron levels over time, including after each shutdown.

From mid-2016 onward, iron levels remain consistently below 0.2 ppm—even after multiple inactive periods—indicating long-term corrosion control.

Conclusion
The data demonstrates that a well-maintained treatment strategy can protect systems effectively during seasonal shutdowns, drastically reducing corrosion rates and stabilizing system performance year-round.
