Context : Miura Standard Boiler Water Treatment

Miura boilers, especially the once‑through modular watertube models, are widely regarded for efficiency and reliability in industrial settings.

But due to their low‑water content and relatively large internal surface area, they are more sensitive to scaling and corrosion than conventional fire‑tube boilers. Miura strongly recommends a rigorous water treatment program to preserve efficiency and prevent tube failure.

At the core of Miura’s standard offering is a silicate‑based water treatment that forms a thin, protective film on the inside of boiler tubes. This eco‑friendly solution inhibits scale and corrosion, without requiring time‑dependent activation like sulfite chemistry.

Miura even guarantees the pressure vessel against corrosion failure when this technology is used. [1]

However, while silicate treatments address many corrosion concerns, they are not always sufficient to deliver consistent, optimal results, especially under dynamic operational conditions, variable feed‑water chemistry, or when deposits and free acids persist.

That’s why many operators seek complementary or alternative solutions to ensure better control over pH, iron content, conductivity, and total dissolved solids.

In such demanding environments, film-forming amines offer a more robust and adaptive chemistry, aligning with Miura’s design logic: high performance, minimal footprint, zero compromise.

Case Study – A Pharmaceutical Leader with High Standards

One pharmaceutical manufacturer, recognized internationally for its high-purity processes, relies on a Miura boiler system at the core of its clean steam supply.

The installation includes three 300 HP Miura boilers, two of which operate continuously, while the third remains in stand-by mode, activated on a rotating 15-day cycle. This configuration ensures both production continuity and thermal redundancy, but it also places a high burden on water treatment consistency, especially during transitions between operating and idle modes.

Baseline : Compliant Chemistry, Corrosive Reality

Before any changes were made, water chemistry in the active Miura boilers was nominally within the manufacturer’s specifications, and blowdown routines were performed according to standard operating procedures.

Yet despite these efforts, the 3 boilers showed signs of advanced internal corrosion.

The Solution : Film-Forming Amines, Applied with Precision

To address the corrosion issues without disrupting operations, the site adopted a film-forming amine (FFA) treatment, injected directly into the feedwater line.

Rather than applying it in full dosage immediately, the implementation was gradual and controlled over several months. This phased approach allowed for a progressive cleaning effect across the system—gently dislodging deposits, stabilizing pH, and forming a uniform protective film on internal metal surfaces.

The goal: restore boiler integrity without triggering sudden release of accumulated contaminants.

Results : From Compliance to High-Performance

Within months of transitioning to the FFAs program, the Miura boilers showed dramatic and sustained improvements:

These improvements were not only chemical, they represented tangible progress in asset preservation, maintenance reduction, and long-term efficiency.
