The same principle applies to steam boilers: before entering operation, a new system must be cleaned, stabilized and protected. Given the high temperatures and pressures involved, poor startup conditions can quickly lead to corrosion and reliability issues, making boiler passivation a key step in a successful commissioning process.

Read the previous Newsletter about commissioning of closed-loops

Steam Boiler Passivation : Cleaning and Protection Before First Operation

Commissioning a new or refurbished steam boiler is not only a mechanical milestone. It is a chemical transition.

Before stable steam production can begin, the boiler and the associated water/steam cycle may contain construction residues, loose iron oxides, welding particles, oils, grease, mill scale and contaminants from storage, transport or installation.

If these contaminants are not properly managed, they can compromise startup reliability and generate:

high iron transport,

unstable boiler water chemistry,

deposit formation,

localized corrosion,

increased blowdown,

poor condensate quality,

delayed commissioning,

premature damage to critical assets.

Traditional alkaline boil-out procedures have long been used to clean boilers before operation.

They remain effective, but they can also be complex to manage: strong alkaline chemicals, neutralization steps, wastewater constraints, operator safety requirements and a potential gap between cleaning and long-term protection.

The key issue is therefore not only to clean the boiler. The real objective is to clean, passivate and protect the system before full operation begins.

Film-Forming Amines : A Modern Commissioning Strategy

FFAs offer a different approach to steam boiler commissioning. Instead of separating cleaning, passivation and long-term protection into disconnected steps, FFAs support a more integrated startup strategy.

They help remove loose contaminants while simultaneously forming a hydrophobic molecular film on wetted metallic surfaces, creating what we’ll call an amino-passivation, in contrast to the classic passivation reaction based on oxide film formation. This protective film limits direct contact between water and metal, helping reduce corrosion risk during one of the most sensitive phases of the boiler lifecycle: the first heating, first circulation and first steam production.

This approach is particularly relevant for:

new steam boilers,

refurbished boilers,

boilers after long storage,

systems exposed to hydrotesting water,

steam and condensate networks before full production,

installations requiring fast, controlled and reliable commissioning.

Why This Matters During Startup
During commissioning, metallic surfaces are often chemically unstable due to residual oxygen, construction debris and variable water quality.

FFAs help protect boiler, feedwater, steam and condensate surfaces from the start by creating a protective barrier. Their volatility also allows them to reach steam lines during early circulation, helping condition internal surfaces before full operation. The result is a smoother transition from construction to operation.

A Practical Commissioning Approach
A successful amino-passivation program must be planned before startup and adapted to the specific system configuration and operating conditions.

Key preparation points include:

confirming water quality and available volume,

defining the heating strategy,

preparing the chemical injection point,

ensuring good circulation and distribution,

anticipating blowdown and wastewater management,

protecting sensitive online analyzers during high-turbidity phases,

defining manual sampling and field monitoring,

securing steam blowing arrangements where applicable.

Operational Benefits
A properly designed amino-passivation program can help facilities:

reduce startup corrosion risk,

lower iron release,

accelerate boiler water stabilization,

protect steam and condensate lines earlier,

reduce the need for aggressive cleaning chemicals,

simplify wastewater management,

support faster commissioning,

secure the transition to normal boiler treatment,

improve long-term asset protection.

This is where the business case becomes clear.

A clean startup reduces risk. A protected startup builds reliability.

Case Study – Low Pressure Steam Boiler

System in place

Steam Boiler ICI Caldaie 440F25

Pressure: 360 PSI (25 bar)

Steam: 11’000 lbs/hr (5 T/hr)

Pre-Startup Cleaning & FFAs provide a modern way to achieve this objective by combining cleaning, amino-passivation and early corrosion protection in a single commissioning strategy.

For industrial sites, this means fewer uncertainties during startup, better asset protection and a stronger foundation for long-term performance.

In our previous newsletter (link bellow), we highlighted the importance of properly commissioning closed-loop systems to prevent corrosion and deposits from day one.
